Lot 4809
Constantine I, 307/310-337. Follis (Bronze, 18 mm, 3.13 g, 6 h), a contemporary imitation of an issue from Thessalonica, irregular mint, after 318. VVVVDVVVVDVDVDVVVDV Laureate, helmeted and cuirassed bust of Constantine I to right. Rev. 𐤧SVSD / XXXXXX / HHHHHHH / 𐤧SΛSD in four lines within wreath. Repatinated, otherwise, very fine.

From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, formed since 1969.

This contemporary 'barbarous' imitation, copying a Thessalonica emission of 318-319, has some unusual features. In both dies, the legends have been produced with punches, D and V for the obverse, and D, V, S, X and A for the reverse. The D and V punches have also been used upside down to produce the letters 𐤧 and Λ.
